The Wideband Air Interface (WAI) Overview provides a general definition and description of the wideband system's air interface design and protocol architecture. This document defines the allocation of the general functions to each protocol layer, and provides a conceptual model for the WAI protocol stack and primitive interfaces. A general description of how the WAI is utilized to convey packets of information is also included to aid the reader in comprehension of the detailed protocol layer documents. Detailed technical information is contained in the rest of the WAI protocol documents that comprise the wideband data standards suite.
The general form of the WAI protocol stack is illustrated in Figure 1 below "WAI Communications Stack Model". This document is concerned with the interface between the MR and BR labeled Uw that is shaded gray in the figure. The reader is advised that reference [1] contains all of the WAI reference and protocol models.
The TIA-902 WAI series defines two standard wideband modulation and radio channel coding technologies, along with a common set of higher layer protocols. The relationship and TIA standards designations are shown in Figure 2 below.
In this document and other TIA-902 standards there exists two categories of system configurations; Direct and FNE Configurations. The Direct configuration is supported between two subscriber radios without the need for any fixed network equipment (FNE) components. There are three specific configurations that are generally grouped into the term "FNE Configurations".
• Radio to FNE
• Radio to Repeater to Radio
• Radio to Vehicular Repeater to FNE
