ESDU Struct 02.01.50 considers elastic buckling of a plate without initial irregularities loaded by uniform axial and circumferential stresses, the latter assumed to be due to internal or external pressure. The plate is assumed to retain a circular cylindrical shape up to buckling. At buckling all edges are free to rotate but are constrained against additional radial deformation; the longitudinal edges are assumed to remain straight. Curves are given of the axial stress at buckling plotted against plate aspect ratio (axial length divided by circumferential width), each curve applying to a value of the circumferential stress at buckling. Both stresses are non-dimensionalised by a parameter involving the modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio and plate geometry. Five graphs are provided, each at a fixed value of a non-dimensional curvature (the square of the circumferential width of the plate divided by the product of its thickness and radius). The graphs are divided into regions in each of which the number of buckle half-waves along the length is indicated. The formula from which the curves were calculated is also included. A worked example illustrates the use of the data. ESDU 72019 provides similar data for a flat plate.
