ESDU 91039 1991-DEC-01 Statc and fatgue strength of butt welded jonts n alumnum alloys
ESDU 91039 presents results extracted from the literature showing the strength of welded joints under static load compared to the strength of the parent metal. The data cover ranges of alloys and fillers for various plate thicknesses and were statistically analysed. Data are also given in 22 graphs of alternating stress against endurance for some 15 alloys in the 5000, 6000, and 7000 series welded with various fillers from the 5000 series under axial or bending loading. Nearly 800 points are shown extracted from the literature, fitted with mean lines. They relate to specimens in the as-welded condition and with various post-weld treatments including bead removal. Tables detail welding process variables, geometries and fatigue strengths at 1E6 and 1E7 cycles. A general description of the weldability of the alloys is included, and factors affecting fatigue strength are discussed (loading, stress ratio, plate thickness, weld size and profile, residual stress level, shot peening and heat treatment). Alloy compositions and temper designations are also detailed.
