ESDU 89004 1989-MAR-01 Effect of frettng on fatgue strength of alumnum alloys
ESDU 89004 presents, in sixteen graphs, plots of stress versus endurance for the results extracted from the literature of over 500 fretting fatigue tests on six alloys. The data allow the effects of clamping pressure and slip amplitude to be seen. Various surface coatings and treatments were used in the tests to try to reduce fretting fatigue, and their effects can be compared. Some tests were made under variable amplitude loading and others in an artificial sea water environment although the majority were in room temperature air. Most of the data related to specimens of identical alloy in mutual slip, but some of are for steel, brass or copper sliding against the aluminium alloy, and allow the effect due to the use of different materials to be seen. Each graph is accompanied by a table giving the details of the alloy composition and treatment, the testing arrangements and surface treatments applied, and the mechanical properties of the alloy.
