ESDU 87018 gives detailed examples of calculations of take- off and accelerate-stop distances. The methods used are representative of one approach to generating field length data for a flight manual. The implications of the airworthiness code used and of operating requirements are considered, and the detailed input data are specified (aeroplane geometry, axes systems, aerodynamics and powerplant data, ground forces, manoeuvres used, and operating times for various devices). The calculations were made using an airframe manufacturer's computerised performance system, and the results are discussed. The details of the calculation procedure are included, and cover the definitions of the segments (and their end points) into which the take-off or accelerate-stop is divided, a description of the sequence of calculations required to define a step in the step-by-step solution of the equations of motion, and an explanation of how, from the given data, the required forces, moments, displacements, angles and speeds are determined.
