Purpose of this Characteristic
This document sets forth the desired characteristics of a Multi-Mode Landing System Receiver (MMR) intended for installation in all types of commercial transport aircraft. The intent of this document is to provide general and specific guidance for the development and installation of the MMR primarily for airline use. This Characteristic describes the desired operational capability of the equipment, the standards necessary to ensure interchangeability, form factor, and pin assignments.
AEEC initiated the development of this Characteristic as a means to satisfy the following high-level goals:
a. Improve existing Instrument Landing System (ILS) capability by providing means to satisfy ICAO Annex 10 RF immunity requirements in the near term.
b. Provide optional Microwave Landing System (MLS) capability in the form of an ILS look-alike, in the near term.
c. Provide a foundation for developing Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Landing System capability (GLS).
