Purpose: This document describes a stand-alone windshear warning system (WWS) specifically designed for retrofit installation in commercial type aircraft having primarily analog interfaces. The system is comprised of a basic single airborne element, designated the windshear warning computer (WWC), which uses data pertaining to aircraft movement with respect to air movement to detect and annunciate a windshear condition. The system, as an option, may also provide instrument guidance to the crew indicating optimum pitch to endure the encounter.

This document provides general and specific design guidance for the development and installation of a windshear warning system. It describes the desired operational capability of the system and the standards necessary to achieve interchangeability of hardware.

Equipment manufacturers should note that this document encourages them to produce maintenance-free, highperformance equipment rather than that of minimum weight and size. They are at liberty to accomplish this objective by means of the techniques they consider to be the most appropriate. The airlines customers are interested primarily in the end result rather than the means employed to achieve it.
