Purpose: This document sets forth the characteristics of a Flight Warning Computer System (FWCS) intended for use in commercial transport aircraft.

The intent of this document is to provide general and specific design guidance for the development and installation of a FWCS primarily for airline use. It will describe the desired operational capability of the system and the standards necessary to ensure the level of interchangeability specified in Section 1.4.

Equipment manufacturers should note that this document encourages them to produce maintenance-free, highperformance equipment. They are at liberty to accomplish this objective by means of design techniques they consider to be the most appropriate, as their airline customers are interested primarily in the end result rather than the means employed to achieve it.

COMMENTARY: Alerting devices are provided in aircraft to draw the flight crew's attention to the onset of conditions which, if left unchanged, could cause operational difficulties or prejudice the continued safety of the flight. The circumstances in which alerts are generated are determined from safety and operational analyses or are dictated by airworthiness authorities. Typical examples of warnings given to the flight crew are: stall warning, configuration warning, landing gear warning, cabin altitude and pressure, VMO/MMO, fuel pressure warning, oil pressure warning and fire warnings.
