This Report includes guidelines to be considered as part of the electronic packaging design task. The applicability of any particular section in this Report is dependent upon the environment in which the avionic systems, subsystems, and cables are located.

The applicability of these guidelines to the RTCA DO-160 test conditions identified in ARINC Specification 650 can be determined by reference to the Environmental Requirements/Guidance Cross Reference Matrix shown in Table 1-1.

Table 1-1 identifies sections of RTCA DO-160 that define both the physical and electromagnetic environmental conditions for electronic equipment installed within the generic FAR/JAR Part 25 metallic aircraft. (twin-engined, wing-mounted turbojet).

The generic Part 25 aircraft type is divided into thirteen environmental areas encompassing subsidiary zones in order to address the environmental conditions defined within RTCA DO-160. Conditions applicable to these areas and subsidiary zones for specific aircraft are also detailed in the airframe manufacturer specifications. Although there will possibly be more benign zones within each area, equipment designs should take into account the overall environmental conditions for the encompassing area. The most current issue of any applicable standard, especially FAR/JAR Part 25 and RTCA DO-160 apply.
