This specification describes digital fiber optic transmitters and receivers. A digital transmitter is an optoelectronic transducer which converts a binary logic electrical input signal to a modulated optical output signal. A digital receiver is an optoelectronic transducer which converts a modulated optical input signal to a binary logic electrical output signal. A transmitter-receiver pair may be used to transfer information between two points through an optical fiber.

This specification and the associated detail specification define the technical requirements for an item to be acquired, either a digital fiber optic transmitter or receiver, as briefly described in 1.1 herein, the item is referred to generically as "module" or "device".
