NACE TM0298 1998-MAR-27 Evaluatng the Compatblty of FRP Ppe and Tubulars wth Olfeld Envronments-tem No 21233
This standard presents a procedure for the evaluation of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) pipe and tubulars for use in oilfield service. FRP pipe systems include the pipe or tube body, connections, fittings, and adhesive and elastomeric seals. This standard is intended only to evaluate the pipe or tube body; other components of FRP systems are outside the scope of this standard. This standard includes proce- dures for exposing the FRP pipe or tube to simulated oilfield environments and the determination of the comparative apparent tensile strength. Pipes or tubes of different wall thickness may respond differently due to differences in the concentration gradients established through-wall produced by permeation of corrosive or reactive species in the envi- ronment. The purpose of this standard is to allow for the comparison of test data among test laboratories and provide a recognized test method to evaluate the compati- bility of FRP pipe and tubulars for various oilfield applica- tions.
This standard recommends the reagents to be used, describes the test specimens and test equipment to be used, and gives the test procedures to be followed. This standard describes seven environment categories:
Sour Water Environments
Sweet Water Environments
HCI Environments
Mud Acid Environments
Organic Acid Environments
Hydrocarbon Environments
Supercritical CO2 Environments
In view of the wide range of service conditions, this standard is intended to provide a means of initial material evaluation and is not necessarily intended to provide any direct correlation with service petformance. No attempt has been made or implied to establish any pass/fail criteria for materials tested by this method. The change in properties of an FRP tubular material is indicative of its resistance to a specific environment. Use of this standard provides a mea- sure of the relative resistance under the conditions of this particular test method, but does not necessarily provide results that have any direct relation to service petformance. Hence, this test method shall be considered as a screening method. The significance of the results can be determined only by each laboratory for its particular application.
Similar systems that possess different wind angles may also yield different results when this test method is used. The difference relates to the percentage of load transferred to the fibers at failure.
The precision of this test method and reproducibility within and among laboratories has not been established. Specimens being tested using this test method may be dif- ferent in petformance or alike within test error. The user of this standard is encouraged to establish statistical signifi- cance of the data resulting from using this test method.
Safety Precautions: H¿S is an extremely toxic gas that must be handled with care. See Appendix A for safety con- siderations and information on toxicity of this gas.
