Purpose

This specification establishes the requirements and procedures for producing a hard, wear resistant ion nitrided surface on steel parts.

Application

The ion nitriding process is typically applied to increase surface hardness, increase wear resistance, and reduce coefficient of friction of alloy steels, tool steels, nitriding steels, corrosion resistant steels (CRES), carbon steels, ferrous powder metal products, and other ferrous alloys but usage is not limited to such applications. See 8.2.6 for other materials that can be ion nitrided.
