PREFACE

This handbook was written to encourage and support the use of Fiber Optic Avionics data bus systems covered by MIL-STD-1773 and demonstrate the versatility MIL-STD-1773 offers for system implementation. The handbook fills in details that are necessarily not allowed within the rigid confines of a MIL standard and provides guidance for the preparation of a system detail specification under the standard.

Typical details include pertinent component types and their parameters, advantages and drawbacks of different implementation approaches, and a comparison to electrical bus systems.

Future editions will contain updated information based on changes and evolution within the fiber optics technology and 1773 applications experience. This handbook is intended as a forum for ideas and information exchange.
